Q: What do I get if I participate in the project?
A: Information on how to garden, help preparing land for your garden (at least 90 square feet), gardening supplies, regular reports on your health, and cash stipends for attending health data collection sessions.
Q: When will I get a garden?
A: Over three years (2016-2018), 100 families will be screened for eligibility and enrolled in the study. Half of the households randomly will be selected to receive gardens right away, and the other half of the households will act as “controls.” Control participants will receive gardening support after two years of participating in health data collection.
Q: Can children participate?
A: Yes, children aged 5 and older can participate.
Q: What health information will be collected?
A: Twice per year for two years, we will take measurements of body composition, blood pressure, and hand strength. We will also conduct blood draws (finger pricks for children under 18) to look at many blood-based health measures. Finally, participants will take a survey.
